"Helping to Preserve our railway heritage - and the memory"

From 1957 until 2004 these Diesel Electric multiple units were the workhorses of the non - electrified passenger routes of the Southern Railway. Resented by some as they replaced steam locomotives; but loved by others due to their reliability and shorter journey times, they certainly divide opinion. What cannot be argued is that after 42 - 47 years service, they fulfilled their "short term" objective of providing passenger services until all lines were electrified, axed or new stock was provided. Some of the examples that have been preserved are a testimony to the Railways and Volunteers that have had the foresight to preserve these amazing machines.
This site is primarily concerned with keeping enthusiasts up to date on those units that have been preserved ; but we welcome any submissions that are more generally "Thumper" related and help to preserve the memory of these wonderful machines.
